Frequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions people most often have about the online dice roller, dice notation and dice odds.
Using the roller
- Is the online dice roller free?
- Yes. You can roll as many times as you like without paying, registering or installing anything. The site is supported by advertising.
- Does it work on my phone or tablet?
- Yes. The page adapts to small screens and the buttons are large enough to tap. It works in current versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge and other modern browsers.
- Does it work without an internet connection?
- The page has to be loaded once from the internet. After it has loaded, the dice are rolled entirely in your browser, so rolling keeps working even if your connection drops while the page is open.
- How many dice can I roll at once?
- Up to 100 dice in one roll, and each die can have from 2 to 1000 sides. You can mix different dice in one roll, for example
1d8+2d6+4. - Can I roll dice that don’t exist physically, like a d7 or a d30?
- Yes. Type
1d7,1d30or any other number of sides from 2 to 1000. A1d2works like a coin toss. - How do I roll with advantage or disadvantage?
- Use the d20 advantage button, or type
2d20kh1(keep the highest one). For disadvantage type2d20kl1(keep the lowest one). Add your bonus at the end, for example2d20kh1+5. See all supported notation. - Can I see my previous rolls?
- Your last eight rolls are listed under the result while the page is open. The list is cleared when you reload the page or press Clear history.
- How do I turn off the sound?
- Untick the Sound box under the dice. The roller remembers your choice in your browser the next time you visit.
Randomness and fairness
- Is the dice roller really random?
- Yes. Each die is rolled with your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator,
crypto.getRandomValues. It is the same kind of randomness browsers use for security features. The roller also uses rejection sampling so that every face has exactly the same chance, with no small bias towards some numbers. - Can anyone see or change my rolls?
- No. The dice are rolled on your own device. Your rolls are not sent to our server or stored anywhere except the short history shown on the page.
- I rolled the same number three times in a row. Is something wrong?
- No. Repeats are a normal part of randomness. With a six-sided die, the chance that the next two rolls both match the one you just made is 1/6 × 1/6 = 1 in 36, so it will happen fairly often over an evening of play. Each roll is independent; the die does not remember earlier results.
- Is an online die as fair as a real one?
- It is usually fairer. Real dice can have small manufacturing differences, rounded edges or uneven weight, and they can be thrown in ways that are not completely random. A good random number generator has none of these problems.
Dice notation and odds
- What does 2d6 mean?
- Roll two six-sided dice and add the results. The number before the “d” is how many dice to roll, and the number after it is how many sides each die has.
- What does the +3 in 2d6+3 mean?
- It is a modifier: after adding up the dice, add 3. A minus sign subtracts instead.
2d6+3gives results from 5 to 15. - What is a d20?
- A twenty-sided die, numbered 1 to 20. It is the main die in Dungeons & Dragons and many other role-playing games. Each number has a 5% chance.
- What is d%?
- A percentile roll, the same as
1d100. At the table it is often rolled with two ten-sided dice, one for the tens and one for the units. - Which total is most likely with two dice?
- 7, with a chance of 6 in 36 (1 in 6). The least likely totals are 2 and 12, each 1 in 36. The probability guide has the full table.
- Why do opposite faces of a die add up to 7?
- It is the standard layout for six-sided dice: 1 is opposite 6, 2 opposite 5, and 3 opposite 4. Because the online roller simply picks a random face, the layout doesn’t affect the result, but it is a nice way to check a real die.
